Major and Minor Characters

How do we determine who are the major characters and who are the minor characters? As you read this novel, think of a character that you notice most of the action revolving around and ask yourself:

  • What does the narrator say about the character?
  • What do other characters say about the character and how do they behave towards this character?
  • How does this character act, think, and what do they say?

Like a theme or message in a piece of literature, often the reader must figure this out because it is not always stated outright.

You will be given certain information by the author, but other information you may have to figure out and in so doing, there are things you must take into consideration. Here are some of the things you might consider:

  • How does the character deal with conflict?
  • What is the character's personal background?
  • What motivates this character to take action?
  • Does this character have high ideals, hopes and dreams?
  • What are the strengths and weaknesses of this character?
  • Do others respect this character? If so, how?
  • Does this character have leadership skills?

As you read the novels, fill out this chart and be prepared to tell why you have placed the characters in the category that you have chosen.
